Queen Elizabeth is served afternoon tea on a daily basis, with her favourite teas being Assam and Earl Grey, according to a formal royal butler, Grant Harrold.
According to former royal chef Darren McGrady, the Queen’s favourite finger sandwiches are cucumber, egg, and smoked salmon, with all the crusts cut off.
McGrady previously said: “The royal chefs send a whole cake up to Her Majesty every day for tea.
“She will sometimes take a slice and then it is never seen at the royal table again.”
The cake is apparently then sent to the staff for their afternoon tea after Queen Elizabeth has helped herself to a slice.
“The chocolate biscuit cake is the only cake that goes up to the royal table every day until it has all gone – sometimes this means it following her to Windsor Castle for the weekend,” Darren said.
The Duke of Cambridge also loves the decadent recipe, explaining why he requested it at his royal wedding in 2011.
McGrady has also talked about making shortbread for the Queen and Prince Philip when the couple would stay at Balmoral during the summer.
He explained: “I used to make shortbread at least once a week at Balmoral and it was always on the afternoon tea menu.
“The royal recipe includes cornstarch, too. Cornstarch softens the shortbread – it makes it less glutinous.
“Instead of snapping, it crumbles and just melts in your mouth.”
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall:
Camilla enjoys classic British favourites such as smoked salmon, potted shrimp, and roast venison sandwiches, all of which were served at her royal wedding to Prince Charles in 2005.
The couple enjoyed scones with clotted cream and jam, fudge, and strawberry tartlets.
Charles and Camilla also love eating Welsh cakes during afternoon tea.
When the royal couple are staying in Wales, they frequent The Village Bakery in Wrexham because they adore their Welsh cakes served with clotted cream and jam.
When the Duchess of Cambridge visited Kilcooley Women’s Centre in early 2020, she revealed how she takes her tea.
After visiting Ark Open Farm, the centre posted on Twitter: “Just like us little bit of milk…. so down to earth we were enchanted.”
In 2019, the royal couple stopped to eat at the picturesque Inn on the Lake in Ullswater in the Lake District.
They ate a full afternoon tea at the hotel which includes freshly prepared finger sandwiches with the following fillings: Honey and orange roasted gammon and Hawkshead piccalilli, Appleby Creamery cheddar cheese and sweet pickle, egg and chive mayonnaise, and cucumber and crème fraîche with black pepper.
Meghan is said to prefer herbal infusions over English breakfast tea.
She opted for mint tea instead of coffee during a visit to Birkenhead in January 2019.
