How to make lemonade
Lemonade is really simple to make and takes just 10 minutes from start to finish.
If you are looking for a recipe to make with a child, lemonade would work.
This recipe makes around a litre of lemonade, which means it serves around four people.
Simply double the ingredients to make enough for eight cups.
The lemonade produced is vegetarian and can be vegan if you use vegan caster sugar.
It’s not too calorific either, weighing in at 140 calories per serving (the same as both fingers of a 55g Twix bar).

Ingredients
• 3 unwaxed lemons, roughly chopped
• 140g caster sugar
• 1l cold water
Method
Step one
Tip the lemons, sugar and half the water into a food processor.
Blend until the lemon is finely chopped.
Step two
Pour the mixture into a sieve over a bowl, then press through as much juice as you can.
Step three
Top up the mixture with the remaining half a litre of water.
Serve with plain ice or frozen with slices of lemon and lime.
How to make pink lemonade
Pink lemonade is a tangier alternative to regular lemonade.
It also makes a dull day a little more exciting and is perfect for any girly girls in your household.
This recipe takes 10 minutes, but requires a few more ingredients.
Ingredients
- 300g caster sugar
- 1½ lemons, sliced
- 1 orange, sliced
- 3 x 170g/6oz punets raspberries
- ice and fresh mint, to serve (optional)

Method
Step one
Place all the ingredients in a large saucepan and pour over 350ml cold water.
Step two
Bring to the boil, stirring often, then leave to cool.
Step three
Pour through a sieve, pressing down with a spoon to extract all the juices.
Step four
The syrup can now be stored in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Step five
To serve, pour a little into a glass and top up with sparkling or still water, ice and mint.
How to make watermelon lemonade
Watermelon lemonade is a little more complex, but if you master the presentation it is a showstopper.
Ingredients
• 1 large or 2 small watermelons
• 250ml lemon juice (from a bottle or squeeze your own)
• 100g golden caster sugar
• 1l bottle soda water
• 1 lime, cut into slices
• small handful mint
• crushed ice
Method
Step one
Cut the top off the watermelon and hollow it out using a large spoon, fishing out any pips along the way.
Step two
Mash the flesh through a sieve into a bowl. Put the flesh in a blender (or use a tall jug and hand blender) with the lemon juice and sugar, whizz to a purée, then stir in the soda.
Step three
Heap some ice into the hollowed-out watermelon and fill it with the lemonade mixture.
Step four
Serve the rest in a jug with the lime slices and mint. Have a bowl of extra crushed ice on the side so people can help themselves.
