Here’s a creamy take on traditional buttered rum: Rumchata is a blend of rum, cream, cinnamon, vanilla, and sugar. Essentially, it’s the Mexican drink, horchata, combined with rum. Even if you’re unfamiliar with horchata, the apple pie spice adds the coziness you know and love in a winter cocktail. The result is a combination of two super-comforting, homey drinks that’s perfect for sipping by the fireplace or on a rainy day.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (2 oz.) salted butter, softened
  • 3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cups hot water
  • 1cup horchata-flavored liqueur (such as RumChata)
  • Cinnamon sticks, for garnish

How to Make It

Step 1

Stir together butter, brown sugar, apple pie spice, and vanilla in a small bowl until combined. Store, covered, in refrigerator until ready to prepare drink.

Step 2

For each drink: Spoon 1 tablespoon of the butter mixture in bottom of a coffee mug; pour 1/3 cup hot water over butter mixture, and stir until melted. Top with 1/4 cup RumChata, stirring well. Garnish with a cinnamon stick; serve immediately.
