Kate Middleton, 40, is a very glamorous member of the Royal Family, however she is also a crafty cook in the kitchen for her three children, Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four. From time to time, the Princess of Wales has shared things she enjoys cooking, especially around Christmastime.

Kate appeared in a documentary made in honour of the late Queen’s 90th birthday back in 2016.

She said: “I can remember being at Sandringham, for the first time, at Christmas. And I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present.

“I was thinking, ‘Gosh, what should I give her?’ I thought back to what I would give my own grandparents. And I thought, ‘I’ll make her something,’ which could have gone horribly wrong. But I decided to make my granny’s recipe of chutney.”

The old Middleton family recipe is for marrow chutney—a kind of fruity condiment that many pair with cheese or bread. 

“I was slightly worried about it, but I noticed the next day that it was on the table.

“I think such a simple gesture went such a long way for me and I’ve noticed since she’s done that on lots of occasions and I think it just shows her thoughtfulness, really, and her care in looking after everybody,” Kate added.

The full recipe for the marrow chutney was printed in Pippa Middleton’s entertaining book, “Celebration”, which was published in 2012.

The book was described as a “fully illustrated and beautifully designed book packed with recipes, crafts and inspirational ideas”.

How to make the Middleton recipe for Marrow Chutney

Ingredients (Makes eight jars)


Put the chopped marrow, onions and apples into a large preserving pan, add the rest of the ingredients and the bag of spices and stir together, then place over a medium heat.

Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat and simmer gently from one and a half to two hours or until well blended and thick.

Take the pan off the heat, cool and remove the muslin, squeezing the liquid form from the bag. Spoon it into sterilised jars with vinegar-proof lids, filling them to within one cm of the top.

Ensure the rims are clean, screw on the sterilised lids and store in a cool place for up to 12 months. Once open, store in the fridge and use within one month.

Making this jar of royal chutney would not be too expensive for royal fans if they wish to dine like Kate Middleton this Christmas. An average marrow from Sainsbury’s would cost just £1.40.

Similarly, purchasing four medium onions would only set fans back only 89p from Lidl. From the same shop, royal fans can buy three apples for just £1.07 from Lidl.

In addition, stoned dates cost just £3.79 from Lidl, and sultanas cost just 99p. Malt vinegar can be purchased cheaply for just 29p from Aldi, whereas soft brown sugar from Waitrose would add another £1.90 to the overall cost.

Ground ginger from Waitrose costs another £1.30. Finally, pickling spices cost just £1.10 from Sainsbury’s. This makes the total cost of the Middleton chutney ingredients comes to £12.73.
