KFC open: Huge queue forms as mad rush for takeaways restarts and UK reopens for business

Footage of extremely long queues of motorists across the country has emerged since KFC has reopened 55 of its drive-thru restaurants across the nation, after seven weeks of coronavirus lockdown measures. The fried chicken chain had already reopened 100 stores for delivery-only orders.

As the demand for more “finger-licking” chicken became instantly huge, KFC promised to reopen more stores in the coming weeks.

KFC’s website says: “An update from The Colonel: We’re reopening in a responsible way, this means we’ll be serving a limited menu to help the smaller kitchen teams maintain social distance.

“If you’re not near one of our open restaurants, never fear. We’re working hard to reopen more over the coming weeks.”

The company continued: “We just want to offer a little more choice to those who are already on the road for essential journeys or on their way home from difficult shifts.”

The company is offering a reduced menu as it has fewer employees working at one time.

American burger chain McDonald’s also unveiled the location of the 15 restaurants it plans to reopen for deliveries next week after the fast-food chain closed all its sites in March at the start of the coronavirus lockdown.

The stores, which are clustered around London and the South East, will offer a limited menu, including some vegetarian options, delivered within their local areas.

Two of the sites are in Chelmsford: Riverside and Westway, while three are in Luton at Leagrave, Chaul End Lane and George Street.

The stores will be open from Wednesday next week to make deliveries between 11am and 10pm, with staff asked to be extra careful about social distancing measures.

Last Friday, the burger giant revealed that it would reopen 15 unnamed restaurants after spending a week testing its operations behind closed doors.

Before they open, the restaurants will undergo deep-cleaning with floor markings and Perspex screens installed.

The company will work with Just Eat and Uber Eats to deliver food to customers’ doors.

“When we return it will be different as we all adjust to this new normal. I want to apologise in advance if our first wave of reopened restaurants does not serve your area,” McDonald’s UK boss Paul Pomroy said last week.

“Rest assured, we are working hard to reopen more restaurants, but I am adamant this must be at the right pace with the wellbeing of our employees, suppliers and customers front of mind.”
