In honour of the Platinum Jubilee, the Queen is inviting home cooks aged eight and above to create a brand new dessert. This will be judged by Mary Berry, experts from Fortnum and Mason’s, and the head chef from Buckingham Palace. Food Blogger Jane Dunn will also be one of the judges, who appeared on This Morning with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield to discuss what they are looking for.
Jane said: “We’re looking for something as big as the Victoria sponge, the Coronation Chicken – anything that will be remembered, but maybe a more new and exciting flavour?”
Jane was asked by Phillip what the Queen might like as her Platinum Jubilee dessert.
She continued: “I can imagine she would like quite a delicious, classic flavour.
“I think something quite exciting like white chocolate raspberry would be quite good here and especially at the time of year like you start getting into the summer months – something quite light.”
Royal expert Gyles Brandreth was also on the programme and offered his insight into what the Queen likes for dessert.
He said: “I’ll tell you what she likes she likes – simple.
“She likes unfussy, and this is the Platinum Pudding.
“The ideas created for this dessert will be happening all over the land on June 5 on the great, ultimate day, serving as a classic pudding.
“It’s hopefully going to live as long as the Victoria Sponge, which is very simple, has lived.
“The Queen herself is not a fussy eater, they’re very keen never to tell you what the Queen likes because otherwise every function she goes to, they serve exactly the same thing.
“But I do know she’s not got a big appetite, she doesn’t like a great deal of richness, so this idea of being exciting is going to be, I think, quite challenging.
“The ultimate judges are going to be Mary Berry, a judge from Fortnum and Mason’s and a chef from Buckingham Palace.
“The head chef there will really know what the Queen likes, so I think keep it simple and inclusive.
“It may have to be a fruit and veg rather than anything meaty in there!”
Analysis of Google search data revealed that online searches for ‘pudding recipe’ exploded 733 percent in the UK on January 9, just hours after the announcement of Fortnum and Mason’s platinum pudding competition for the Queen’s upcoming Platinum Jubilee celebration.
A new finding by kitchen equipment experts Maxima Kitchen Equipment revealed that online interest for ‘pudding recipes’ skyrocketed eight times the average volume in the first few hours after the announcement.
A spokesperson for Maxima Kitchen Equipment commented on the findings for Express.co.uk.
They said: “Fortnum & Mason’s Platinum Pudding Competition is a fantastic way to honour the Queen and celebrate her 70th year on the throne!
“The rise in searches for ‘pudding recipes’ immediately highlights that the public is already looking for inspiration to enter the competition, searching for a pudding great enough to impress the panel of expert judges, including the Queen of baking herself, Mary Berry!
“This competition serves as an engaging and delightful way to celebrate the beloved Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by uniting the nation and it will hopefully inspire a new generation of bakers to also get involved!”
