Well, there’s at least one green bean casserole you can’t ignore, mainly because it weighs more than 1,000 pounds. This week, vegetable company Green Giant decided to partner with ten chefs at New York’s Stella 34 Trattoria to prepare a 1,009 pound green bean casserole in honor of their participation in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It’s so big, in fact, that it shattered the existing Guinness World Record for largest green bean casserole… set by Green Giant in 2017. I think it’s safe to say that nobody without access to a mass quantity of and a financial stake in the sale of green beans will be gunning for this record anytime soon.
Here are some facts and figures associated with the green bean casserole that may be literally 1000 times larger than your aunt Carol’s. According to a press release, around 125,000 of Green Giant’s Cut Green Beans made their way into the casserole, drawn from 1,069 cans. Additionally, preparing the gargantuan dish required 485 cans of mushroom soup, as well as an astounding 65 quarts of milk. Then the whole thing was topped with 95 pounds of fried onions. Altogether, the thing took eight hours to prep and cook.

The good news is that the record-setting side dish isn’t just for show. Now that it’s been cooked up, the casserole will be served through Citymeals on Wheels to 3,000 New York City senior citizens this Thanksgiving, which sure feels like heartwarming gesture.
So if you find yourself complaining about a shortage of green bean casserole this Thanksgiving, just think: I could’ve made 1,009 pound casserole capable of feeding 3,000 seniors. Start planning for next year accordingly.
