Toby Carvery announces huge changes to restaurants – and customers are fuming at new rules

Restaurants will finally be allowed to reopen to the public next month as the government implements the next phase of easing the lockdown. But while many customers are happy to be getting back to their favourite eateries, some are disappointed with the new measures that have been put in place. Toby Carvey has announced how its restaurants will work when they reopen.

Restaurants around the UK have had to remain closed during the lockdown for everything except takeaways, in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus. 

However, the government recently announced that businesses will be able to reopen from July 4, provided they stick to strict social distancing measures. 

Many restaurant chains have been revealing how the dining experience will change, with Toby Carvery being the latest to share how the rules will work for customers. 

The chain, which offers British roast dinners with all the trimmings every day of the week, has posted an update on its website and social media channels. 

Toby Carvery stated on its website “We are back,” with a message to say that the safety of staff and customers was its priority as it gets back on its feet. 

“We are looking forward to being able to welcome you back but there will be some temporary difficulties regarding the supply of a number of ingredients for specific dishes on our menus, and some dishes may not be available at all,” the message read. 

“Therefore, the descriptions on menus may not accurately reflect the contents of the dish. We’re working hard to solve these short term issues, so please bear with us.”

The company has revealed strict guidelines for guests hoping to come in for their next roast.

The chain is reopening on July 4, the official date from which restaurants around the country are permitted to open their doors. 

However, the restaurants will have a limited capacity, with fewer tables set up for customers. 

There will also be a limited bar or waiting area available, so the chain is asking its diners to arrive on time in order to keep everyone safe. 

All bookings can have a maximum number of six guests, including children and babies – and there will also be no breakfasts served on the first two days of the reopening.

However, as well as the reduced menu due to stock supplies, the restaurant is making a major change to how it serves its customers. 

A carvery is well known for the fact that customers can help themselves to all the roast dinner trimmings, and load up their plate once the staff have sliced them their choice of meat. 

But in order to stick to social distancing and minimise contact between customers, chefs will now be dishing up every element of the meal for you. 

The move is designed to stop fears over the sharing of utensils as customers from different households help themselves to roast potatoes, vegetables and other side dishes. 

The restaurant’s staff will also be doing drink refills rather than customers helping themselves. 

However, the chain has been clear that customers can still have as much or as little as they like – as the Carvery is well-loved for the fact that guests can pile up their plates for one flat price. 

But fans aren’t convinced, with many sharing their horror at the new rules on the chain’s Facebook pages. 

One commenter said: “That’s half the fun. Seeing how much you can load onto a plate and discussing the best tactics to use. And for that reason…I’m out.”

Others said it means “It’s not a carvery” and so he won’t be visiting the restaurant again. 

Another commented with their disappointment, saying: “What’s the point of going then? The plates were getting smaller anyway so you’re going to get less even more but more money I can do at home.”

Toby Carvery wrote: “We kindly ask for everyone to be patient and understand that as a business we are doing our utmost to ensure you have an enjoyable visit and we operate safely for our team and yourselves.”
