Weight loss can be achieved through eating less food and exercising more. However, with two children and health problems, Charlene Howson, who lives in Hampshire, has struggled with her weight for several years.
Charlene explained that after 10 pelvic operations for her endometriosis and a hysterectomy, all she wanted to was inside and comfort eat.
This caused the mum-of-two to gain six stone and be in a constant state of yo-yo dieting.
She said: “I was really unhappy with myself and my body. There was stress and tears every morning! I would hide myself in baggy clothing. In the mornings I would struggle to get out of bed and just didn’t want to leave the house….Lockdown gave me a great excuse to hide away and not do anything.”
The 35-year-old explained that her weight caused her challenges in all areas of life including her job as a gardener.
She went on: “On top of that I’m asthmatic, so it made my asthma even worse. I used to get out of breath a lot. I remember I tried to do the couch to 5K challenge during lockdown. After running for just ten seconds my chest would be burning. I lost all confidence and gave up after that. I have two daughters and wanted to be able to run around with them and not come last on sports day!”
When it came to dieting, the mum-of-two has tried Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Cabbage Soup, Atkins and The Fast 800 but nothing was sustainable for the slimmer until she found Noom.
Noom is a psychology-based programme that empowers slimmers to make healthier choices by understanding themselves, their brain and the science of choice.
It has helped millions of people meet their personal health and wellness goals.

People following the lifestyle change can receive one on one coaching during business hours.
Charlene explained: “With Noom, I have not been miserable at any point. It’s just slotted into my life because it changes the way you think about things. I wish I’d known about it years ago when I was suffering badly and would never leave the house. Noom has helped me work through a lot of bad habits.”
Since following the psychology-based programme, Charlene has managed to drop four dress sizes and shed 3st 5lbs since October 2020.
She added: “Since losing the weight I have so much more energy! I’m no longer sluggish in the mornings. Instead I’m the one up at 6am making breakfast and telling the girls to get a move on so we can walk to school together.
“It’s definitely rubbing off on my family which is great to see. My husband has lost weight too; he’s the lightest he’s been since he was at school, and my girls are more physically active. They’re getting a better-balanced diet and like having a more colourful plate of healthy food!
“The other day I decided to give running another try, and I ran a mile! There was no challenge to it whatsoever. I didn’t need my asthma pump – I felt great. I have not done that since I was maybe 18 years old. My husband and I even climbed Mount Snowdon recently! I would never have done that a few years ago – I never challenged myself like that. Now I’m looking forward to it!
“It’s been such a boost for my confidence. When I get up in the morning I can put on anything I want and be happy. No more tears. I look good! I’m not squeezing myself into a smaller size to make myself feel better because I am the smaller size now.
“I have a whole new wardrobe too! Friends are always asking me how I did it. They tell me I look like a different person! They asked me what am I missing out on? What am I not eating? But I am genuinely not going without anything.”
Charlene now has a much better relationship with food and explained that she won’t restrict herself from the foods she loves, but will just watch her portion sizes.
Noom has enabled the 35-year-old to be more confident in making her own decisions, so she is no longer swayed by temptation.
She added: “Noom has helped me outside of my weight loss too. I’ve become much better at making decisions. I now know how to eliminate things that are not good for me and make better choices for myself.
“Noom has helped me have a clearer mind. I could honestly list a thousand good habits I’ve picked up from using Noom. The whole programme has helped me in so many areas of my life.
“My advice to anyone starting out is just to believe in yourself. If you don’t believe you can achieve your goals then it will never happen. At the end of the day, I’m just a normal person – I’m not a health freak by any stretch of the imagination. It’s all about belief!”
