Did you know that you need to burn 3,500 calories to lose one pound in weight? It’s not easy to drop excess fat but you shouldn’t give up on your quest to your dream body if that’s what you really want. Ditch those boring workouts that you hate and choose the workouts that burn the most calories to be more successful.The more efficient exercises are often cheaper too and don’t require a pricey gym membership or personal trainer. Express.co.uk chatted to the personal finance experts at Ocean Finance to find out which exercises burn fat the fastest – saving you both time and money (in the gym).

It goes without saying that it’s mainly your diet that decides how much weight you’re putting on or losing.

However, regular exercise is great for your general health, can ward off a range of deadly diseases and help you lose even more weight.

Personal finance experts pointed out that some workouts are more effective and better value than others and have revealed the five best exercises for burning fat the fastest (and cheapest).

It’s worth noting that these figures are based on someone who weighs 11 stone, so the exact calories you’ll burn depends on your weight among other things.

Treadmill

If you work out on a treadmill at 10 miles an hour, you’ll burn 1,228 calories on average.

That’s a brisk pace and one of the top speeds on the treadmill, so you probably won’t be able to manage this speed the whole time.

If you run at half the speed for the same amount of time you’re still burning 614 calories. And if you did that every day, five days a week… you’re burning enough to lose a pound a week (and maybe more if you’re doing more exercise and eating well).

You could also burn 930 calories if you run at 7.5 miles per hour for an hour.

To burn one pound in weight quicker, you’d need to run for two hours and 48 minutes at 10 miles per hour but this may not be manageable.

Running is also pretty cheap, with the Ocean Finance experts suggesting the activity will set you back £10 per pound (including the cost of supportive trainers and a gym membership).

They said: “While it’s good to change up which type of exercise you do per session to target different areas of the body in the longer term, our research found that straightforward cardio is the most cost-effective way to shift pounds.”

Elliptical trainer

Using the elliptical could help you burn 782 calories per hour on average.

You’d need to do around four and a half hours on the machine before you lose a pound, though.

Using this machine to lose weight will apparently cost you a little more at £19 per pound.

Stationary bike

Spinning is known for being an amazing way to lose weight and burn calories, and it’s not hard to see why.

It will only cost you around £17 per pound lost when working out on a stationary bike at a vigorous pace.

You’ll be burning around 744 calories per hour on a stationary bike, and with this high-impact workout, it will take around four hours and 42 minutes to lose a pound.

Step aerobics

Step aerobics will only cost you £19 per pound lost, and you’ll lose a pound for every four hours and 52 minutes.

If you do a one-hour-long step aerobics class, that’s around 706 calories burnt!

However, you don’t even need to join a gym or pay anything for aerobics.

You only require your body and a YouTube video to follow along to workout at home and lose weight.
