What is the keto diet?

Regular exercise and healthy eating is important when trying to lose a few pounds.

When trying to find the perfect diet, there are plenty of plans to choose from.

Some slimmers will follow the ketogenic diet where they will limit their carb intake to roughly 25 grams net carbs per day.

Instead of eating high carb foods, they can fill up on foods high in fat and with a moderate protein content, nutritionist Suzannah Robin told Express.co.uk.

She said: “It has been heralded by keto enthusiasts as an extremely effective way to lose weight, achieve a better physique, and even get rid of cellulite as well as increase energy levels.

“It is based on splitting daily calories between fat, protein, and carbohydrates with an emphasis on fat intake and a limitation on carb consumption.”

By cutting back on carbs, it is thought the body will enter into a state of ketosis.

Keto fans believe this prompts the body to burn more fat quickly.

When limiting carb intake, slimmers should avoid eating foods such as bread, rice, pasta, sugary treats and some high-sugar fruits.

Instead, there are plenty of high fat foods dieters can pick to fill up their plates.

“Some foods are considered to be essential to the keto diet,” Suzannah added.

“For example, seafood and shellfish, cheese, avocados, meat and poultry, eggs, greek yoghurt and cottage cheese.”

Slimmers can also tuck into high fat foods such as nuts, seeds, oils and low carb vegetables.

While the diet plan is popular, it may not work for everyone, the expert warned.

Those hoping to lose weight may have to adjust what they eat to make the diet plan work for them.

She said: “Each person will react to foods in different ways, losing weight and burning fat at different rates.

“This means understanding how your body is burning fat is really useful when it comes to following a keto diet.

“Bear in mind that everyone loses weight in different ways so while one method might work for one person, adjustments will need to be made for another.”
