Katie Walton, the creator of the Embrace Over 40 fitness and wellbeing programme, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk to explain what diet Queen Letizia may follow.
She said: “Queen Letizia has a naturally slim frame, however, we do know she works hard at her health and her fitness to maintain her enviably toned figure.
“She has turned 50 and, at this age, hormone levels can drop, often leading to weight gain. However, weight loss is possible at this age but an anti-inflammatory diet needs to be followed,” the expert claimed.
Why is this?
Katie explained: “As we get older, our bodies become more inflamed and, if we don’t look after ourselves, we are more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes.
“Queen Letizia is Spanish and follows a Mediterranean diet, so she will be eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, olive oil, avocados, nuts, fish and olives.
“As well as eating healthily she will be keeping active every day – a little bit of daily exercise is key to keeping the weight off. To maintain her slim figure at 50 she will be combining cardio training with lifting weights as well as including Yoga and Pilates,” the expert opined.
What is Queen Letizia’s favourite meal?
Katie continued: “The Queen’s diet would consist of protein-rich foods and nutrient-dense ingredients. A favourite meal would be fresh fish (such as Salmon) with plenty of antioxidant, iron-rich leafy greens (Spinach/Kale/Broccoli) with a healthy dose of olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice.
“After an early morning run, a green Smoothie is the perfect breakfast option if she has a busy day ahead – made with kale, spinach and berries.
“Another breakfast option is an omelette with smoked salmon which is high in omega 3 fatty acids – essential for bone and skin health.”
What foods does the Spanish Queen avoid?
Katie suggested: “A high protein meal plan is essential for fueling her workouts and to keep her going on days when she has lots of royal engagements. To keep up her energy levels, all processed food, saturated fats and high glycemic foods must be avoided, so no pasta, cheese or meats for Queen Letizia!
“She needs to keep her blood sugar levels stable so sugar and alcohol is out! A diet rich in protein, high in fibre and low in carbohydrates means she wouldn’t be hungry and therefore wouldn’t feel the need to snack.
“Drinking three litres of water with lashings of green tea would fill her up and keep her body and skin hydrated during the day.”
What exercises does Letizia enjoy?
The expert added: “To keep healthy, strong and flexible in your 50s and beyond requires a fitness regime that is varied and uses lots of muscles.
“Although running is okay, there are better ways to stay fit in midlife – high-intensity bursts of exercise work better, especially combined with lifting weights.
“Her toned limbs are thanks to a regime of cardio, weights, boxing, Zumba and Yoga. Regular exercise helps with weight loss, strength and toning.
“Pilates is also a great option as this helps to build strength and flexibility as well as give Queen Letizia super-sculpted abs!”
