There are lots of diet and exercises plans available which promise to help with weight loss goals. When it comes to getting into shape, a nutritionist explained the benefits of a high protein diet.

Eating healthy foods is vital when trying to achieve sustainable weight loss results.

When figuring out what to eat, Link Nutrition nutritionist Libby Limon suggested protein could be the answer.

Protein, along with carbohydrates and fats, is a macronutrient which is present in most foods.

Choosing meals high in protein could help with weight management and ultimately help slimmers lose belly fat, Libby continued.

The expert explained: “Make sure you have protein at every meal.

“Protein is slower for the body to digest, so it has the general effect of making you feel fuller for longer.”

The expert suggested protein will help slimmers feel fuller than other foods, which could make them less likely to opt for unhealthy snacks.

What are high protein foods?

Protein is present in lots of different meals and can fit around all dietary requirements, the expert continued.

Libby said: “Try to incorporate plant-based protein as well as meat, fish and dairy.

“Beans, peas, pulses, tofu and high protein grains such as buckwheat and quinoa, can really help in terms of creating a healthy diet that will promote a healthy weight.”

As well as eating high protein meals, the expert suggested filling up on a variety of healthy vegetables.

She continued: “Often when people want to lose weight they focus on reducing the quantity of food on their plate.

“Whilst portion size is important, it is also crucial to fill yourself up but on the right foods.

Although dieters need to be careful not to eat more than they need, Libby explained the importance of eating enough of the right foods.

She added: “Vegetables in particular are high in nutrients, water and fibre but low in calories, building up your plate up with these whilst reducing calorie dense foods means that you will still feel full and will help prevent cravings.”

Staying clear of sugary drinks will also aid weight loss goals, Libby claimed.

She stated: “Avoid sugary drinks. Sugar especially in liquid form is a place where our bodies don’t register the amount.

“It doesn’t trigger our natural systems to that signal being full or receiving enough calories. They, therefore, can easily push up your calorie consumption without you really noticing it.

“Even ’sugar-free’ or ‘diet’ drinks have been shown to still have a negative effect on weight as the trigger cravings for sugar and calories.”
