Balsamic is a dark, concentrated vinegar that originated in Modena, Italy and is best known for its complex, sweet taste.
The richly flavoured condiment is made wholly or partially from grape must – freshly crushed grape juice with all the skins, seeds and stems.
When it comes to cooking, balsamic is traditionally used to enhance sauces and salads, but it’s much more versatile than it seems.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, flavour expert and founder of The Gift Of Oil, Phil Bianchi said: “Olive oil and balsamic vinegar, with crusty bread, is a classic and delightful dish.
“Unlike its counterpart, balsamic vinegar is not utilised enough in the kitchen and pairs perfectly with many dishes that are far from popular but should be!”

He claimed that just a drizzle of the acidic condiment can transform a host of staple ingredients, including ice cream, cheese, and even soda water.
The latter can be teamed with the rich vinegar to form a Coca-Cola dupe without all the added sugar. Phil explained that while it is “an unusual pair”, mixing soda water and balsamic vinegar creates a fizzy drink that “tastes just like coke”.
He said: “It’s completely ingenious, plus it’s a lot better for you than a can of fizzy pop. This is one you just must try to understand.”

The craze has been tried and tested by TikTok users in the past, including Amanda Jones (@Mandyvjones), who crafted the ultimate recipe.
She used a can of guava-flavoured sparkling water, a splash of balsamic vinegar and a drop of liquid sweetener such as vanilla extract.
Alternative uses for balsamic vinegar don’t stop there either. In fact. Phil claimed that it makes for the perfect ice cream topping too.
He said: “When thinking about ideal toppings for ice cream, balsamic vinegar is not something that springs to mind. Strawberry sauce, flakes, marshmallows, sherbet, and yes, balsamic vinegar are all perfect pairings for a delicious ice cream.
“A balsamic glaze tempers the richness and adds a subtle flavour to the ice cream. Try an infused flavour such as cherry for an extra delicious addition.”
Late summer strawberries can be infused with the acidic condiment too, all it takes is one hour for them to marinate at room temperature to ensure the fruits soak up all of the flavour and “taste even better”, according to the Gift of Oil founder.
